Genine Patrick

Genine Patrick is the owner of Pilates Body Studio.

“I qualified with Body Control Pilates in April 2004, at the time I was a full time legal secretary and my intention was to teach Pilates as a hobby every Saturday. As a legal secretary based in an office at a desk I had terrible posture and lots of back pain. I was travelling in Australia when I was introduced to Pilates which helped me gain a better posture and reduced my back pain dramatically. I was so passionate about the effect this had on my life I now teach matwork and equipment Pilates full time. Since taking up Pilates I have been able to run the London marathon and cycle the London to Brighton bike ride, without pilates my back would not have allowed me to do this.

In 2009 I became a ‘Supervising Teacher‘ for Body Control Pilates; an international body set up to safeguard the standards and quality of Pilates teaching. I mentor students and help them become qualified in matwork and equipment tuition. I am also part of Body Control Pilates Education Team responsible for the training of teachers and students in the Pilates Method on the various courses they provide.

I am also a level 4 ‘Back for Good‘ instructor meaning I specialise in helping people with back pain. I will help you manage your pain by learning exercises that are suitable for your back when you are suffering. Not all pain is harmful, understanding your pain will help you recover quicker, rather than resting which will only prolong the healing process.

I am very passionate about Pilates and helping others, it has changed my life and I know it can help you”

Lottie Murphey

I have practiced Pilates since the age of 16 and I fell in love with it whilst practicing daily at dance college (Central School of Ballet) where I trained for 3 years. I believe it was my dedication to Pilates which allowed me to remain uninjured, fit and healthy for my whole 3 years training (quite unheard of in classical ballet).

I went on to do freelance dancing and modelling jobs for various brands/shows. But I kept being drawn back to my Pilates classes and decided to train as an instructor in 2012 with the respected Body Control Pilates in London.

I now aim to help people on their journey to discover the never ending benefits of Pilates. I also continue to develop myself through attending regular classes and aim to complete many other courses in Pilates as well as nutrition. I have never once been bored whilst practicing Pilates as it keeps you engaged, focused and challenged. I am constantly amazed at how as well as toning, improving strength, flexibility, coordination and posture, Pilates makes you feel less stressed, have improved mental focus and an uplifting sense of well being!

I discovered Pilates in 2004 and soon recognised the benefits in my own posture. What started as rehabilitation soon turned into my weekly fix! My strong believe in the benefits, both physical and psychological, led me to train and qualify as a teacher with Body Control Pilates®. I’m a member of the Body Control Pilates Association and the Register for Exercise Professional and am qualified to teach all levels of Matwork and Equipment.

I believe health and fitness is directly linked to happiness and for me Pilates should form part of a healthy balanced lifestyle. Pilates strengthens, energises and relaxes. I believe it is not just beneficial for preventing back pain and rehabilitation from injury, but also if you simply want to balance your cardio regime with the toning and core strength Pilates provides.

For many years before discovering Pilates I experienced chronic back pain. There was no concrete diagnosis and I resorted to Pilates as a form of treatment – it worked and I’ve been promoting the benefits ever since. Pilates have kept my body strong and pain free so I can pursue an active outdoor lifestyle. I’ve trekked in the most wonderful and remote places around the world, and have reached the summit of Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp. Pilates played a key role in my preparations.

I like to incorporate my energy and love for Pilates into my classes and love seeing clients grow strong, look better and most importantly feel better about themselves. My classes are flowing and dynamic, I like to challenge you but have compassion for any limitations you may have.

I look forward to meeting you in one of my classes soon.

Natalie Smith

After leaving performing arts college (Laine Theatre Arts) at 19 with my ISTD Associate/FDI teaching qualifications in Ballet, Modern and Tap, i embarked on my career as a Professional Dancer for over 15 years dancing for artists including Take That, Whitney Houston, Elton John, Robbie Williams,Olly Murs, Kanye West, X Factor, Dancing On Ice, Top of the Pops and much more. I later progressed into choreography and became the Assistant Choreographer for girlband ‘The Saturdays’, ‘Surprise Surprise’ (ITV), Take Me Out (ITV) and Children In Need (BBC).

It was during my dance career that i discovered Pilates. I not only enjoyed it and felt energised after but it had huge benefits to me as a dancer, increasing my core strength and flexibility aswell as increasing muscle strength whilst keeping my body lean and toned.

In 2013 i became a STOTT Certified Matwork Instructor and straight after went on to complete my Advanced Matwork. Im very excited about furthering my Pilates education in the future. I want others to feel the benefits of Pilates as i have and try to make my classes effective, educational and most of all fun!

Christy Karpanen

Born in Australia, I grew up doing ballet and dance as well as living an active, sporty life.  After studying exercise physiology at the University of New South Wales, I moved to the UK in 2009 where I began specialising in deep tissue and remedial massage, and later qualifying as a nutritionist.

My dance background brought me to pilates 13 years ago, and has led me to training to become a pilates teacher myself.  I qualified in mat work with Body Control Pilates, and went on to complete my cadillac and reformer training with Lisa Bradshaw.  My deep interest in biomechanics and functional movement has led me to currently undertaking my comprehensive studio training with Polestar Pilates UK.

I think Joseph Pilates summed it up perfectly – “Be in control of your body, and not at its mercy”.  My classes and studio sessions are created with this in mind – helping people to discover just how good their bodies can feel.

I trained at a full time vocational dance school from the age of eleven, whilst studying I was introduced to Pilates as a way of preventing injuries. My professional dance career includes; Alexander Roy London Ballet Theatre, London City Ballet and Weinner Ballet Theatre. I was also in the original cast for Cameron Macintosh’s Phantom of the Opera Tour.

I then went on to the Professional Dancers Teaching Diploma Course at the Royal Academy of Dance. Upon graduation I taught at a vocational school in Edinburgh, and had my own dance school EH Dance UK for 10 years. I have been guest Ballet Mistress for the Curve Foundation and the Gelabert Dance Company during the 2004 Edinburgh Festival. I am a Grade’s Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance and am regularly invited to teach both Ballet and Pilates in Royal Academy of Dance Summer Schools worldwide; working alongside Alan Herdman, who was the first pioneer to bring Pilates to the UK in the 1960’s. In 2002 I qualified in Pilates, with Body Control Pilates and was the first regional teacher to gain the Studio Master Teacher Certification. I am now part of Body Controls Education Team involved in teacher training.

I believe the key to Pilates is to encourage and allow the natural movement back into the body. I have been a guest lecturer on the Body Control Pilates Development Seminars and have worked with many clients specialising in; osteoporosis, back/disc injuries, major surgery, post and pre natal clients, professional dancers and was even contracted by Working Title Productions to coach Sam Angell who starred in the leading role ‘Billy Elliott’ (London).

Pilates, having been such an integral part of my career, has certainly made me fit for life!

Liz Sadzik

I discovered Pilates 9 years ago, while training as a classical pianist at a conservatoire of music. Long hours of practice and prolonged periods of sitting had taken their toll, and I was suffering from rounded shoulders, tension in my neck and back and headaches.

After starting to attend just one Pilates class for an hour a week, I quickly noticed that fundamental changes to my body were taking shape – my posture improved, I became leaner, more toned and most importantly I felt great! I am passionate about the amazing results Pilates can achieve, and now teach Pilates in conjunction with my freelance musical career.

I have completed the Body Control Pilates matwork and pregnancy courses, am a member of the Body Control Pilates Association and am on the Register of Exercise Professionals (Level 3).

Lucy Merriman

I discovered Pilates 18 years ago through personal experience of severe back pain.  Pilates became part of my weekly routine and before long I no longer needed the pain killers.  I felt the benefits which fuelled my passion for this type of exercise and led me to study to become a Body Control Pilates teacher so I could help others feel the benefits too.  I love helping people to relax, stretch and strengthen their bodies.  I’m passionate to keep learning and developing as a teacher.  Working with my clients to help them progress and to feel the best they can and have fun whilst doing so.

Emma Hutchings

I am the newest member of the team and before joining the Pilates Body Studio I worked in the City as a PA for about 17 years.

I have 2 children and I was looking at retuning to work and heard about an opportunity at Pilates Body Studio in Bexley. As it’s a local job I still get to have a great work/home life balance and no more stressful train journeys! Everyone at the studio both clients and staff are really friendly and helpful. One of our core values is customer focus – I believe it is one of the reasons our clients keep coming back as everyone is treated as an individual.

I’m pleased to be part of such a fab team and am looking forward to what the future holds for Pilates Body Studio.

Yoga was once an occasional visitor in my life, finding me in times of challenge or simply when I needed a ‘workout’. Now the practice is so much more than that, it is an integral part of my life that has facilitated my spiritual evolution and gifted me with a sense of wholeness and deep curiosity into the complexities of life. I was drawn onto the path of teaching yoga after years of working in the finance industry and feeling deeply disconnected. My yoga mat always served as a sanctuary where I could connect back to inner peace and joy. I chose mat over money and left banking for good! I travelled to India where I qualified as an Astanga Vinyasa teacher, and shortly after I became certified to teach Yin yoga. I enjoy returning to India to deepen my practice and connect back to my roots.

My classes explore the physical, energetic and spiritual sides of yoga, challenging the body and mind, yet leaving students calm and aware.

Genine, the Studio owner and her family are personal friends of mine and have been for years. I started working for Genine in 2010, just mornings to begin with, helping with reception and general administration duties. This is now my 4th year working at PBS; I have watched it grow into the successful company it is today and am very proud to be a part of it. I have worked in an office environment since leaving school many moons ago and previously worked for the Metropolitan Police and managed the School of Law at the University of Greenwich.

I live locally in Bexley and have 2 children so working at Pilates Body Studio gives me the perfect work/life balance. I’m a strong believer in Pilates, I was referred by my doctor to do Pilates after the birth of my daughter having suffered from back pain during the pregnancy and have never looked back! I get to try and test out all our classes, which is a great bonus!

I love working on reception at Pilates Body Studio, meeting and greeting our lovely clients and enjoy all the stories they have to tell.
